U.S.-Canada Tariff Update: What Members Need to Know

The trade situation between the U.S. and Canada continues to evolve, with new tariffs now affecting some industry products moving across the border.

New Canadian Tariffs – Effective September 8th

Canada has announced new tariffs on U.S. goods as part of the ongoing U.S.-Canada trade situation. This comes after the U.S. recently raised tariffs on Canadian autos, alcohol, and dairy products. The new Canadian tariffs started on September 8 and apply to goods made in the U.S., including:

25% tariff:

Gas fireplaces and gas heating appliances
Wood and pellet stoves/fireplaces
Gas grills and grill parts classified as covered appliance parts

50% tariff:

Metal chimney and venting products, including steel pipes and fittings
Other steel fireplace, stove, and grill components may also be subject to this rate, depending on specific tariff classification

Not affected:

Electric fireplaces are exempt from these new counter-tariff measures

This list is based on tariff codes from the Canadian government, which may differ from U.S. classifications. HPBA members should check with their customs broker to confirm exactly how these tariffs apply to their specific products.

Existing U.S. Tariffs Remain in Place, New Import Bans Announced this Week

On the U.S. side, nothing has changed: Canadian exports in our industry are still subject to a 25% tariff under Section 232, the U.S. rule covering national security-related imports. Last week, the Trump administration announced import bans on Canadian dairy products, alcohol, and motorcycles set to go into effect on September 29.

What HPBA and HPBA Canada Are Doing

Over the past 18 months, staff and members from both associations have met with government officials in Ottawa and Washington, D.C., to advocate for a resolution to this trade uncertainty. That work continues, with both organizations urging policymakers to reduce trade barriers and restore predictability for businesses on both sides of the border.

Staff will continue tracking developments closely and will update members as negotiations progress. In the meantime, members should work with their customs brokers to understand how current and new tariffs affect their specific product lines.
